A LONG-TERM, TRANSFORMATIVE WORK

Instituto Vini.Jr is the realization of a dream for Vini Jr, Real Madrid striker, but also for his family, friends, and all the staff responsible for the athlete’s career. As the player signed his first professional contract, the family began helping people and institutions in São Gonçalo, in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro, where Vini was born and raised. But the objective has always been to build a solid, consistent, long-term work, something that is truly transformative. Instituto Vini.Jr has three pillars:

EDUCATION AS A BASIS

We believe that education transforms, but to do so it needs to be a two-way street, where the interests and repertoires of students are as important as the school subjects and experiences of teachers. At the same time, it is necessary to give an opportunity for the students to recognize themselves as autonomous and responsible individuals, capable of interacting with the world and generating their own development paths. Thus, we act as facilitators of the teaching-learning process, proposing a pedagogical practice that values the experiences and stories of each child, respecting their individualities and worldviews and, therefore, building autonomy for their development.

TECHNOLOGY AS A TOOL

02

We understand that children and adolescents are the main protagonists of a new Digital Culture, but they need to appropriate of the new information and communication technologies in a conscious, responsible and critical manner. More than handling equipment, playing games and browsing social networks, students need to perceive technology as a strategic ally in their personal development. Technology is a powerful tool that supports the building process of the student’s autonomy as, through it, we can create experiences that guarantee freedom in decision-making and the ability to make choices, leading the individual to conduct their own actions.

SPORT AS A LANGUAGE

03

We define sport, in the educational context, not just as a practice, but as a universal and timeless language, capable of attracting and guiding students in teaching and learning processes. The theme sports offers a range of connections with the students’ empirical knowledge and, added to digital games or the so-called “gamification”, has the power to facilitate and stimulate learning.

TECHNOLOGY AND SPORTS FOR A QUALITY PUBLIC EDUCATION

Our methodological tripod only works, however, if it is closely linked to the school routine and, above all, if it brings real value to teachers in their classroom practices. It is easy to see that teachers unanimously recognize education as the basis for development, however, not everyone still realizes the value of technology and sports as a tool and language capable of attracting and connecting students. To this end, we propose frequent meetings and training gatherings with school teachers, providing opportunities for dialogue on new technologies, potential innovations in the teaching of school subjects and, mainly, creating a space for the exchange of knowledge and experiences, where the central objective is improving the quality of teaching in public schools.

In addition to dialogue and training of the teaching staff, Instituto Vini.Jr also carries out a structural diagnosis of the schools where it operates, seeking to identify and remedy any technological barriers rendering the implementation of new tools unfeasible, such as the existence and quality of broadband internet, availability of laptop computers, smartphones and tablets, spaces for experimenting with new technologies for students and teachers. If schools do not present minimum structural conditions for the implementation of new technologies, the Institute then provides, with the help of institutional partners, the necessary support to guarantee access to equipment and internet.

OUR MISSION

To support Brazilian public schools in building new teaching-learning models, using technology as a tool and sports as a language, in order to increase the teachers’ confidence, to make the school an attractive place for students, and to value the strengths and interests of the new generations.

OUR VISION

To contribute directly to Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4: Quality Education) and, by 2030, be recognized as one of the main agents contributing to the reduction of inequalities in the Brazilian educational system.

OUR BELIEFS

That social innovation presupposes Diversity and Collaboration; Education is the basis of a fair and equal society; Technology, if put to good use, connects and transforms; Sports has the power to change the world, further increasing the distance between them, further increasing social differences at the base, where we want to act.

EDUCAÇÃO
ANTIRRACISMO

With teacher training focused on anti-racist pedagogical practices, we are contributing to an even more empowered and conscious school environment.

DNA SOCIAL

It can be said that Vini Jr. was born with a Social DNA. Even before he shone on the pitch in Flamengo’s shirt, his family was already well known in the neighborhood where they lived, in the city of São Gonçalo – RJ, as people who helped those less fortunate. Even with scarce financial resources, it was common practice to share with and support neighbors and friends who were struggling. As soon as Vini Jr. signed his first professional contract and the family’s financial life began to improve, the actions, which had previously been shy and focused on a small group of close people, began to expand. It was common in the neighborhood, especially during festive seasons such as Easter, Christmas, Children’s Day, to have events promoted by the family that would offer snacks, fun, toys, tons of basic food baskets and an encouragement and hope for a struggling population in one of the most violent neighborhoods and with the worst HDI in the municipality. The success in football and the meteoric rise in his career, which took Vini Jr. from Flamengo to Real Madrid, was definitely not the beginning of his journey of social responsibility. On the contrary, it was the moment to assume a greater responsibility with the privileges he would enjoy and to expand, in a structured manner, all those actions of solidarity that were already the trademark of the family. At that time, Vini Jr., then a player for a European giant and the senior Brazilian national team, could now dream bigger and go beyond donations and festive events in the neighborhood to propose something more structural. That is when the idea of supporting Brazilian public education came up. Vini Jr. studied the first segment of elementary school in the municipal system of São Gonçalo, at the Paulo Reglus Freire School, but had the opportunity to move to a private school through a scholarship obtained for his high athletic performance. However, practically all his relatives and friends in his age did not have the same privilege, having experienced the difficulties of Brazilian public education such as the devaluation and scarcity of teachers, the terrible physical structure, the violence, the lack of innovation and attractiveness in the teaching-learning process.
As citizens aware of the need to join forces in order to expand and improve access to quality education for Brazilian children in situations of social vulnerability, Vini Jr. and his family decided to put together a team of experts and create a civil society organization capable of helping to tackle this enormous challenge. So INSTITUTO VINI JR. was born, a non-profit civil society organization whose value proposition is based on Article 205 of the 1988 Federal Constitution, which recognizes education as a right for all and a duty of the State and the family, to be promoted and encouraged with the collaboration of society. Realizing the technical and financial limitations of public schools to innovate in their work, especially with regard to new technologies, as well as the increasing distance between students and the school environment, INSTITUTO VINI JR. is working to fill these gaps, contributing directly to the improvement of basic education in Brazil and the formation of new generations. Vini Jr.’s care for others, his philanthropy and social DNA remain intact, but now this powerful desire to help has been systematized and organized in such a way that its impacts are even more responsible, effective, transformative and long-lasting.
